Myelogram
A myelogram is an x-ray exam of the spinal column structures. It is used to detect herniated discs, tumors, and other disorders of the spine. A contrast dye is used to highlight the spine.
At the Outpatient Treatment Center, a history of your symptoms, illnesses, allergies, and medications will be recorded. An IV will be started and your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature will be taken.
In the Radiology Department, an area on your back will be numbed with local anesthetic. Then a needle will be inserted between two vertebrae and into the space between your vertebrae and spinal cord. Contrast will be injected through the needle into the area around your spine. You may feel warm or cold and experience heaviness or pres-sure when the contrast is injected.
What to Expect
During the myelogram, you will lie face down and on your side. These positions open the spaces between your vertebrae. The x-ray table is tilted so that contrast can fill the space around your spinal cord. Foot and shoulder rests keep you in place when the table is tilted. You will be asked to change positions for a variety of x-ray views. A myelogram takes approximately one hour. Once complete, a CT scan of your spine will be done.
Back in the Outpatient Treatment Center, you will lie in bed with your head elevated to prevent the contrast from causing a spinal headache and will be monitored for 4-6 hours. You will be encouraged to drink fluids. Specific instructions will be given before you are discharged.
A radiologist will interpret your exam and a report will be sent to your physician, who will discuss the results with you.
