Lower GI (Gastrointestinal) Series Barium Enema

A Lower GI (gastrointestinal) series, or barium enema, is an x-ray exam of the colon and rectum. The exam is used to detect disorders in the large intestine and rectum including inflammatory disease, diverticuli, polyps, hemorrhoids, and colon or rectal cancer.

What to Expect

For the exam, you will lie on an x-ray table. While you are positioned on your side, an enema tip will be inserted into your rectum. Barium and air will flow into your bowel and may cause a temporary cramping sensation. Several x-rays will be taken while you are lying in different positions. The enema tip will then be removed and additional x-rays will be taken. When the exam is complete, you will be able to go to the bathroom. Afterward, one or more films will be taken to see if your colon is empty.

After the exam, it is important to drink extra liquids and take a mild laxative, unless directed otherwise, to eliminate the barium from your system.

A radiologist will interpret your exam and a report will be sent to your physician, who will discuss the results with you.

Preparing for Your Lower GI Series

When scheduling your appointment, please tell us if you are diabetic or have a colostomy.

You will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for this exam, which includes following a clear liquid diet (jello, broth, tea, juice) and taking a laxative to cleanse your bowel. It is very important to follow the instructions carefully so that the bowel is completely cleansed.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after 9 pm the day before your exam.
  • Medications may be taken with small amounts of water, unless directed otherwise.
  • The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.
  • Inform your physician or x-ray technologist if you are or may be pregnant.
  • Please register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  • Please bring a complete list of your medications, vitamins and supplements to your appointment.
  • Please bring the physician order to your appointment.
