Description
There are differing opinions on whether using the PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test for early detection and screening leads to lower prostate cancer mortality. However, many physicians feel it is still a very valuable test for certain individuals and populations. In light of this, it is still recommended and important that beginning at age 50, men discuss the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening with a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam. If you are African-American or have a brother or father with prostate cancer before age 65, this discussion should occur starting at age 45, or in some cases even by 40 (if more than one first degree relative had early prostate cancer).
