Attention: Patients When you arrive for outpatient services, walk-in care, or ER visits, as a service to you, we will estimate your financial responsibility based on your insurance benefits. If you have a co-pay, we can accept it in cash, check, or credit card.
Quicker Check-in In early 2012, West Medical Center will introduce registration kiosks in Outpatient Registration and Radiology. The kiosks offer more privacy, a faster check-in process, more accurate patient information, and a shorter wait. Pre-register online to make check-in even quicker, and remember to bring your physician order.
Introducing Aquatic Therapy Lake Health and the YMCA have teamed up to provide aquatic physical therapy. Leasing pool space at the West End Y in Willoughby, Lake Health is offering the therapy with treatment programs individually designed to address each patient's specific needs and goals.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is a popular alternative exercise and serves as a compliment to a regular workout routine.  More than 16 million Americans practice the ancient art of yoga. Despite the stereotypes that you need to be flexible, yoga is accessible to people at all levels and is a natural choice for improving overall wellness.

Yoga helps strengthen muscles in different parts of the body.  Yoga focuses on one element of our physiology: the breath. Yoga cultivates awareness and fullness of the breath both alone and in combination with movement called poses. This attention helps every body system run more efficiently and with more resiliency.  Other benefits from yoga include improved breathing and blood pressure, cardiovascular efficiency, balance, memory and depth perception.

Yoga also has benefits for pregnant women, which can include breathing techniques, reducing stress and promoting mental wellness.   Yoga teaches you to release tension and constriction in the uterus using breathing, a technique that is very beneficial during labor and delivery.

One of the main reasons that people do yoga is to help reduce stress in their lives. Yoga improves mood, concentration, self acceptance as well as the capacity for a good night's sleep.  "The best evidence really shows that yoga is good at reducing stress and helping people cope with the stress they have," said Sharon Minjares, MS, RD, LD, director of the Wellness Institute at Lake Health.  "It improves management of stress both psychologically and physiologically.

National Nutrition Month and Diabetes Alert Day

This month is National Nutrition Month and includes Diabetes Alert Day on March 22.  National Nutrition Month is a good time for people to learn more about nutrition.  All foods can fit into a diet or meal plan, but the key is small portion size and eating a wide variety of different foods, especially fruits and vegetables.  Information about nutrition changes over time, so those interested in learning more about the latest nutritional information should visit a dietitian.

Lake Health offers a few simple ways to become healthier:

  • Eat five fruits and vegetables a day
  • Replace white bread with whole wheat bread
  • Use healthier cooking choices like vegetable spray, canola oil or olive oil rather than oil or Crisco.
  • Start walking! This is the best exercise for people to try because they can start off as slowly as they'd like and gradually increase their pace or distance.  Those who have not exercised for a long time should see their doctor prior to starting an exercise regiment.

Unfortunately, the biggest risk factors for diabetes are inactivity, being overweight and heredity.  If you have a history of diabetes in your family, you should be screened.  Symptoms of diabetes include blurred vision, fatigue, dry and itchy skin, hunger, persistent thirst and frequent urination.  Eating right and maintaining a healthy weight can help in controlling one's blood sugar level.
