Lake Health To Hold Low-Cost Sports Participation Screenings
For children, participation in sports has been shown to promote healthy physical, mental and social development. To support the health and safety of young athletes, Lake Health will be offering Preparticipation Physical Evaluations (PPE) on June 18 and July 23.
Required by most schools, the PPE is the definitive guide for physicians and other health professionals who assess athletes before training or competition. At these screenings, Lake Health sports medicine experts will evaluate the student athlete’s general health, current fitness level and discuss any existing injuries or conditions that might increase the risk of injury. The evaluation covers issues that could place athletes at risk during practice or competition such as head injuries, heart and lung problems, heat exhaustion, hydration and overuse.

Freezing the Heart Back Into Normal Rhythm
Lake Health offers cutting-edge cardiac cryoablation for arrhythmias
CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio, June 6, 2011 - It's normal for your heart to occasionally skip a beat or flutter, but it's a potentially life-threatening problem for the more than 2 million Americans who have heart rhythm disorders-arrhythmias. Left untreated, the condition can lead to heart disease, stroke or even sudden cardiac death. Now, Lake Health is offering a revolutionary procedure that literally puts the deep freeze on targeted areas of heart tissue to restore normal rhythm.
The minimally invasive procedure, called cardiac cryoablation, is a safe and clinically proven treatment for arrhythmias, which occur when the electrical circuits in the heart are faulty, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly.
Cryoablation is performed via a specialized catheter-a narrow, flexible wire-that is inserted into a blood vessel, either in the upper thigh or groin, and threaded to the heart while the patient is sedated but conscious. The electrophysiologist then uses the tip of the catheter to induce the arrhythmia, which is detected through continuous EKG monitoring.
"Once we've pinpointed the origin of the arrhythmia, we moderately freeze that area of heart tissue to about -30 degrees Celsius with liquid nitrogen delivered through the tip of the catheter. If it's the right area, the cold will temporarily stop the arrhythmia. If the targeted tissue is not determined to be the precise area causing the arrhythmia, we can restore the cells to their normal temperature and function without destroying them," explained Jamshid Alaeddini M.D., a Lake Health electrophysiologist specializing in the management of arrhythmias.
