CT Coronary Angiography

What is CT Coronary Angiography?

CT Coronary Angiography is a non-invasive radiology (x-ray) procedure that provides detailed images of the heart’s arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.  A Coronary CTA can determine whether either fatty deposits or calcium deposits (plaque) have built up in the coronary arteries, which can lead to heart muscle damage or heart attack. The images are similar to those provided by an invasive procedure called a heart catheterization without the need to insert catheters into the body and without the need for a recovery period after the procedure.  X-rays are passed through the body and are picked up by detectors in the scanner.  Because of advances made in CT technology, three dimensional images of the heart and coronary arteries are created.

What to Expect

A nurse or technologist will insert an IV line into a vein in your arm to give contrast (x-ray dye) during the procedure.  You will lie on your back on a CT scanning table and you will be asked to raise your arms over your head for the exam.  EKG electrode patches will be placed on your chest so that your heart rate can be monitored during the exam.  The CT table will move slowly through the machine while it is taking images of your heart and blood vessels.  You will be asked to hold your breath for approximately 10 to 15 seconds during the scan.  You will be given a Nitroglycerine pill under your tongue during the exam which will dilate your blood vessels for better images of the small coronary arteries. When the scan is complete, a radiologist will review the images and deterimine whether additional images are required.  The complete exam including preparations takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

Is there any special preparation required?

You should wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to your exam. You may be given a gown to wear during the procedure.  You will be asked not to eat for three hours before the exam.  You may drink water, but you should avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks and cola. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra should be stopped 48 to 72 hours before the exam. Depending on your heart rate or pulse, you may need to take a medication to slow your rate the night before and/or the morning of your exam. You may feel more tired than usual from the medication. In certain instances, additional medication is given during the exam to slow the heart rate.  You should let your physician know if you are allergic to contrast or x-ray dye. Women should inform their physician and the x-ray technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant.
