CT scans are images taken with X-rays and a specialized computer. The scans provide cross-sectional "slices" of major body systems. High-resolution scans of small, intricate body structures are performed routinely. CT scanning is the preferred technology to diagnose many conditions, including stroke, brain injury, chest and abdominal pain, and the diagnosis of certain cancers. Lake Health has five state of the art multi-slice spiral CT scanners offering the most advanced CT technology available while improving patient comfort and safety.

The 64 slice CT scanners allow Lake Health the ability to provide CT coronary artery angiography, while our 16 slice scanners with fluoroscopy technology allow for faster CT biopsy procedures. Both state of the art multi-slice spiral CT scanners are available at TriPoint Medical Center and West Medical Center. The Mentor Campus Outpatient Imaging Center also has a 16 slice CT scanner capable of high resolution imaging for outpatient CT imaging needs The low table height on all of our systems allow for easier access for the less ambulatory patients, and fast, single breath hold imaging technology allows for superior imaging with less discomfort. The new dose reduction technology decreases the patient radiation dose by up to 40%, while the automated applications select the scanning parameters for the best image at the lowest dose.

What to Expect

During a CT scan, you will lie on a table. The table will move slowly into a large doughnut-shaped scanner. You will be asked to lie still for a short period for each "slice" scanned and you may be asked to hold your breath at times. You may receive an IV contrast dye and may experience a warm sensation and a metallic taste in your mouth because of the injection. These sensations usually disappear in a short time. For an abdominal scan, you may be asked to drink Barium before the exam. The scan causes no pain and the technologist can see, hear and speak with you throughout the exam.

A radiologist will interpret your exam and a report will be sent to your physician, who will discuss the results with you.

Preparing for Your CT Scan

If you have had an allergic reaction to contrast dye, please let your physician know. It may be necessary to take medication for several days prior to your exam to prevent an allergic reaction.

• Do not eat or drink for four hours before the exam.
• Take your usual medications with a small amount of water unless directed otherwise.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
• Inform your physician or technologist if you are or may be pregnant.
• Please register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
• Please bring a complete list of your medications, vitamins and supplements to your appointment.
• Please bring the physician order to your appointment.
