CT Colonography
CT Colonography, also known as “virtural colonoscopy” is a CT scan of the inside of the colon that is otherwise only seen by inserting and edoscope into the rectum (colonoscopy). CT scan is an X-ray test that creates special images of the body. The images from the CT scan are transferred to a computer, which creates a detailed set of 3D pictures of the colon.
During the exam, you will lie on the CT scan table and a flexible tube will be inserted into your rectum to allow air to be gently pumped into the colon by a Radiologist using a hand-held device. The air is used to expand the colon to eliminate folds and wrinkles so that polyps, if present, can be more easily seen. You may experience a temporary sense of fullness and bloating, but nearly all patients report that the air insufflation is not painful. It takes about fifteen minutes to perform the actual CT scan. The first series of pictures will be taken with you lying on your back, followed by another set lying on your stomach. After the pictures are taken, the tube is removed and the exam is complete.
Since there is no need for sedation, you can drive or return to work after the procedure
You may also eat normally afterward.
Preparing for CT colonography
On the day before your exam, you must limit your diet to clear liquids such as clear broth, tea, or juice. The bowel preparation that you take the day before your appointment is essential for a good exam. The colon needs to be prepared so that the radiologist can clearly see if any polyps are present. The special liquid that you drink passes through you and is not absorbed by your body. Because the liquid is not absorbed, it causes most people to have diarrhea on that evening only. You will be given specific preparation instructions at the time of scheduling.
