Summary of Quantifiable Benefits 2008

This report highlights Lake Health’s community benefit activities for Fiscal Year 2008. Community benefits are programs and services that address identified community health-related needs, regardless of source or availability of payment, and provide measurable improvement in health access, health status and the use of health care resources.

Medicaid Shortfall

Costs for providing care to Medicaid patients generally are higher than reimbursements or payments from the government. This leads to a shortfall.

Free or discounted health services provided to people who cannot afford to pay for health services and who meet our organization’s financial assistance policy criteria.

Community Health Education

Lake Health has an extensive community health program that provides health screenings, physician lectures, self-help and exercise programs in multiple community locations throughout Lake and Geauga counties and surrounding areas. Our support groups help meet educational and emotional needs related to a variety of conditions. We also partner with many local organizations, including the United Way, the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association to increase awareness of health issues in the community.

Community-Based Clinical Services

Clinical and non-clinical services are provided to the community at a reduced rate or at no cost. Screenings to help detect high blood pressure, osteoporosis, orthopedic problems, vascular conditions, high cholesterol and diabetes are offered at local health fairs and at Lake Health community events at little or no cost to the participant.

Financial or In-Kind Donations

Contributions including cash and non-cash items made to individuals or non-profit organizations for charitable purposes: Golf outings, community walks/runs and other community events that benefit Lake County and the surrounding area’s growth and cultural wealth comprise this category.

Total Community Care

During Fiscal Year 2008 the hospital system provided $10 million in community benefit.

The Community Benefit Report of Lake Health has been submitted to the Ohio Hospital Association and does not include salaries or other indirect costs.
