CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio, November 4, 2009 - Lake Health's TriPoint Medical Center and West Medical Center have earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from the Joint Commission for Advanced Disease-Specific Certification as Primary Stroke Centers. Lake Health earned this distinction after the Joint Commission conducted an on-site review of each of the hospital’s acute stroke programs in August 2009.
With both of Lake Health’s acute care hospitals earning this achievement, residents in Lake and neighboring counties now have access to consistent, high-quality stroke care nearby.

Bioness device helps former Navy man walk after stroke
Oct. 16, 2006, began like any other day for former Navy officer Steven Peace, who has served around the world, including three tours in the Persian Gulf from 2001 to 2003. Peace, now 35, went to work, had dinner with friends and watched television in his San Diego apartment before bed.
But when he stood up to walk to his bedroom, he had a stroke.
"Bam! It's like it hit me all of a sudden, and I didn't know what it was," Peace says.
He lay on the floor for 14 hours. A Navy friend called him and pounded on the locked apartment door to no avail, then called an ambulance.
The cause of Peace's stroke is still unknown. He spent Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas that year in Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas in California with no use of his right side. After months in outpatient care at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, he could walk only with a hard-plastic leg brace and a cane.

Lake Health Receives Certified Urgent Care Designation from the Urgent Care Association of America
Concord Twp., OH, October 30, 2009 - Lake Health’s four Urgent Care Centers, located in Chardon, Madison, Mentor, and Willowick, recently received the Certified Urgent Care designation from the Urgent Care Association of America. With this certification, Lake Health and the Urgent Care Association of America demonstrate their commitment toward providing patients with access to appropriate levels of care.
Urgent care fills the gap between primary care and hospital emergency rooms, offering increased convenience and cost savings. When a medical condition can not be handled by a patient’s regular doctor during regular office hours – such as unexpected cuts, burns, sprains or fractures that do not require a visit to the emergency department -- Lake Health’s urgent care centers are staffed by a physician and equipped with x-ray and laboratory services to care for these non-life-threatening emergencies.
