Lake Health Encourages Halloween Safety
With Halloween fast approaching, parents are asking if trick-or-treating is safe. Lake Health Pediatrician, Dr. Marni Turell says that with a few precautions, Halloween can be a happy and safe occasion for all.
"Halloween poses unique risks to children, given that most Halloween activities take place outside in the dark and include walking across streets which puts them at risk for injury," says Dr. Turell.
Dr. Turell offers the following 10 safety tips for parents to keep in mind:
- Children should always go trick-or-treating accompanied by a responsible adult.
- Parents should plan a safe route so they know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves.
- Children should stay together as a group if going out to trick-or-treat without an adult.
- Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields if they are out alone. Make sure they know to stay in populated areas and not to go off the beaten track.
- Let children know to stay in well lighted areas with lots of people around.
- Instruct children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by a parent.
- Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.
- Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
- Be careful when you cross a street. Make sure children look in both directions and that there are no cars coming.
- HAVE FUN!
